Confucius was born in the village of Zou in the country of Lu in 551 B.C. He was a poor descendant of a deposed noble family. He travelled extensively and studied at the imperial capital
He gained renown as a teacher, but when he was 35. Confucius spent five years wandering China with his disciples. The nobles plotted against him to have him arrested or killed . He was arrested once and jailed for five days.
At the age of 62 he was pursued, along with his disciples, into the countryside by a band of soldiers. He then sent a messenger to the king of a nearby country . The king sent his own soldiers to rescue him. Once again, Confucius was to be given land but it was again refused by counsel of another high minister.
After many years of wanderings he eventually returned to Lu at age 67. Although he was welcomed there and chose to remain but he was not offered public office again. He spent rest of his life teaching and writing. He died at the age of 72.
